Testing Week Recap: September in Review

It’s been a whirlwind month of September as we wrap up a multitude of performance combines both in-house and off-site. I really like September; the energy (and chaos) that naturally comes from the start of a new school year (and sport season) has everyone excited for some tremendous possibilities. September is also the month where our athletes lay it on the line to PROVE the work they did over the summer was fruitful. Our staff had the privilege of running multiple athlete performance combines (testing sessions) over the month of September and collected data across over 650 athletes. Here are the trends we saw 👇

As you can see, we get really in-depth about this stuff. It’s our ability to collect good data, interpret the numbers and then make practical decisions that allow our athletes and clients to continually see progress. This isn’t a cookie-cutter program; we make it make sense so our people get the best training possible to get results.

If you don’t have access to a plethora of equipment or resources, you can still assess yourself with a handful of tests that can be done with a little space, a tape measure and a stopwatch. Here are a few tests you can do at home:

  1. Height-Wingspan.
    1. Just line up against a wall and take the measurement.
  2. Mass.
    1. Hop on a scale. It’s close enough
  3. Vertical Jump.
    1. Good measure of vertical power. Just put a tape against the wall, add a piece to your long finger, jump and touch the wall. You can get a decent measurement to compare to in future.
  4. Long Jump.
    1. Put a tape measure on the ground and jump as far as you can. It’s great for horizontal power.
  5. Sprint.
    1. Take a stopwatch and run a set distance. Do your best to be as accurate as possible when timing yourself; it’s a game of milliseconds
  6. 3 Rep Max
    1. A simple lift could be the Trap Bar Deadlift. It’s a bit easier to learn and can be a fair comparison for overall strength across the board. Get a weight that challenges you for 3 reps and see if you get better!

Happy October!
